Family Law Services
Collaborative Divorce
Collaborative divorce is a respectful, non-adversarial process that helps separating couples resolve legal, financial, and parenting agreements without going to court.
Each person retains a trained collaborative family lawyer, and all participants commit to open communication and transparency. Professionals such as divorce coaches, financial advisors, and child specialists may join the process to support the family’s goals. This option is ideal for those seeking to minimize conflict and come to a durable agreement that prioritizes children’s well-being.
Desk Order Divorce
Desk order divorce is a streamlined, administrative process that allows couples to finalize a divorce in British Columbia without appearing in court. Once the required documents—such as proof of separation and child support arrangements—are filed, a judge reviews and signs the divorce order. This option is ideal for uncontested divorces and offers a cost-effective, efficient path to legal resolution.
Separation Agreements
A separation agreement is a legally binding document that outlines how you and your partner will resolve key family law issues such as parenting, child and spousal support, and property division.
These agreements are typically created outside of court, often with the help of lawyers or mediators. In BC, separation agreements are enforceable under the Family Law Act and can be filed with the court if needed. A clear agreement offers long-term stability and clarity for everyone involved.
Unstructured Negotiations
In some cases, separating partners may engage in informal negotiations—on their own or with the help of legal counsel. While this approach can be more flexible and cost-effective, it’s important that any resulting agreement be reviewed by a family lawyer and formalized in writing. We help ensure your rights are protected and that your agreements are legally enforceable.
Litigation
While court should generally be a last resort, we offer litigation services when legal intervention is necessary. Family law litigation may be appropriate in high-conflict situations or when there are concerns around safety, non-cooperation, or power imbalances. Litigation provides a structured and enforceable outcome through the court system when alternative dispute resolution is not suitable.
Cohabitation & Marriage Agreements
Whether you're entering a common-law relationship or planning a marriage, a legally sound agreement can protect your rights and reduce uncertainty.
We assist clients with drafting cohabitation agreements, prenuptial agreements (also known as prenup contracts), and marriage agreements that reflect your shared values and intentions. These agreements address property, finances, and responsibilities during the relationship and in the event of separation.
Mediation
With the support of a neutral third party, mediation allows you to make informed, collaborative decisions about issues like parenting, separation, or property division—on your own terms.
As a trained and experienced mediator, Caroline facilitates respectful, solution-focused conversations that prioritize clarity, fairness, and long-term resolution. Her role is to guide the process impartially and professionally. Mediation often saves time, reduces conflict, and preserves relationships—especially when children are involved. Whether offered in person or through virtual mediation, this service empowers families to craft solutions that reflect their needs and values.
Estate Planning & Administration
Wills
We assist clients with drafting clear, legally valid wills that reflect their wishes and protect their legacy. Whether you're updating an existing will or planning one for the first time, we take the time to understand your goals and guide you through the process with confidence.
Powers of Attorney & Representation Agreements
A power of attorney allows you to appoint someone you trust to manage your financial affairs if you become unable to do so. A representation agreement gives someone authority to make health or personal care decisions on your behalf. These tools are essential to ensure your values and choices are respected, even in unforeseen circumstances. We draft these documents with care and clarity.
Estate Administration
If you're managing a loved one's estate, we provide guidance with incapacity documents, probate applications, estate distributions, and navigating the legal responsibilities of an executor. Our goal is to ease the burden during a difficult time and ensure the estate is handled efficiently and in accordance with BC law.
Polyamorous and Non-Normative Family Services
Families come in many forms. We are proud to offer thoughtful, knowledgeable legal services for poly fam, multi-parent, LGBTQ+, and other non-traditional family structures. Whether you’re cohabiting, parenting, separating, or planning for the future, we help you navigate the legal system with an approach that is inclusive, strategic, and grounded in a deep understanding of how evolving family dynamics interact with BC’s legal landscape.
Our firm is a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and is committed to creating a legal practice where all identities and relationships are affirmed. Our goal is to protect your rights, support your relationships, and affirm your vision of family.
